Eddie Woods photographs

I was backstage at a One World Poetry festival. Early 1980s. Camera dangling from my neck. The old Spotmatic. Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the Russian poet and author of the poem ‘Babi Yar,’ comes up to me and asks: “Are you a photographer?” I reply, “I’m a poet who also likes to take pictures.” “Well,” he says, “I am a photographer.” Then, gripping my chin so hard that I nearly wince, sternly adds: “And I tell you, you are all profile!” Whereat he goes back to chasing some lady around the room. So there you have it. Eddie Woods, profile poet and occasional shutterbug. Some of my shots qualify as ‘photographs,’ others are simply snaps. Below is a small selection to which I’ll keep adding. As time goes by… (All photos hereunder are of course © by Eddie Woods.)

Both now-legendary underground newspapers were born in the mid-1960s. This was the first time the two men had met.
