Dear Poetry Fanatics,
Every now and then a poetry book comes along that is at once excitingly unique and exceptionally good. A book with words and phrases that easily make it on their own but are enhanced by the presentation. Where the manner in which the poems appear allow you to actually feel the author creating them.
Libretti, by the poet and performance artist ‘par excellence’ Jacek Nichs, is just such a book.
This book is rich. This book is packed full of the real stuff that life is made of. This book belongs in your hands!
Here you have the original typed manuscripts of several riveting poems (of varying lengths) clearly displayed over some 68 highly readable photo-collage pages. Embellished with further photos by the artist; along with his drawings, his many meaningful doodles, as well as snippets of hand-written texts. When it comes to poetry, this is truly the whole nine yards.
And you can get all those yards, in either soft or hardcover (or as a pdf download) by clicking here
There you can also read more about Jacek Marian Gisges-Rajewski (Jacek Nichs).
I have known Jacek for many years. And I could tell you a lot about him. But this is not the place for that. What I will mention, however, is that for a considerable spell in the later 1990s he and I separately staged what were, at the time, arguably the most continually significant poetry happenings going down in Amsterdam. Jacek at the fabled Winston Kingdom, with its regular open-mike evenings and numerous other literary events. And I at the (long since past tense) Cafe Co Meyer. Standing room only affairs, were these. With audiences coming to them from all over. I mention this by way of informing you that I have seen Jacek Nichs in full-blown action on beaucoup occasions. And therefore look forward to Libretti the book being followed up by a cd version. Or better yet a dvd. Hey, the more of you who buy the book quickly, the sooner that might could happen!
I WEAR THE SUN ! / I WEAR THE SUN BUT WATCH FOR THE DARKNESS / CHILD OF THE REALISTIC CITY / ENLIGHTENED BEGGAR OF APPLAUDING SQUARES / WHERE FLYING TEMPLES OF PIGEONS ARE RISING… from “City Blood Libretto” by Jacek Nichs
Ciao for now, EDDIE
My poems describing Amsterdam and the obscure characters from the 90s: sexual perverts, bimbo’s, illegal immigrants, white trash, serial killers, high society snobs, beggars, ‘toilet ladies’, abused prostitutes, ignorant tourists… and myself, in all of them. Not just describing stuff but serving the very entrails of the city on a golden platter. Still warm and steaming. Still very, very alive and relevant. My poems written like libretti for an opera, poems performed over and over again in smoky Amsterdam cafes to the background music of drugs and alcohol abuse. Performed by me in theaters and galleries in full make-up and alchemistic costumes. Ritualistic incantations uttered with sweat, love, inspiration. With a trembling, deep voice. Poems extraordinaire: Get them, because it is the best magic you will ever put your hands on! Jacek M. Rajewski on Jacek Nichs
