Sacha Shoots Sacha

Among Sacha de Boer’s more popular books is Retour New York-Amsterdam. Interviews with 16 artists, half of them Dutch living in New York, the other eight Americans in Amsterdam. Fully bilingual, it spans 224 pages and includes 130 photographs (of the artists, their work, and their studios). It was published in Holland in June 2009 and presented to American readers in April 2011, in New York City. While many of the original photos, along with selected works by the participating artists, were exhibited at Amsterdam’s Huize Frankendael in September 2009.

Then from late April through early June 2011, Sacha mounted an exhibition of entirely new and different work at the Suzanne Biederberg Gallery in Amsterdam. This was ‘BACK/The Other Side of the Moon.’ Unique portraits of more than two dozen individuals, some of whom celebrities, showing only the backs of their heads. For a week in between, however, this exhibit moved to Art Amsterdam, the Netherland’s largest and most prestigious fair for modern and contemporary art. During which time a number of portraits from the Retour book replaced ‘BACK’ on the gallery’s walls. Ever with a camera at the ready, Sacha took this opportunity to photograph her own photos!
